Expresso™ GROS Marriage Certificate

ExpressoScottish Marriage Certificates
[For events registered between 1855 and 1930. Actual official certificate - not a transcript.]
Just $55.00 (incl. GST and Australia Post delivery to anywhere in Australia) each.

In the boxes above, enter the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) index reference details for the official pre-1930 Scottish Marriage Certificate you require.

[Please note: The document you are about to purchase is a genuine GROS *certificate*, complete with the embossed seal of the Registry Office. If you don't actually require a certified copy of an entry contained in the GROS marriage register, perhaps an A4-sized printout of a statutory marriage register entry will suffice? Click here for details.]

Due to privacy considerations, we are unable to procure GROS marriage certificates for events that occurred beyond 1929. For those documents, you will have to apply directly to the GROS.

So what can you expect to see on a wedding certificate from 1855 onwards? Well quite a lot really, compared to an equivalent English or Welsh civil registration document. The years 1856 to 1860 aren't much chop, but after then official certificates typically contain these facts:

- Date and place of marriage
- Denominational rites (Church of Scotland, Free Church, Episcopal Church in Scotland, Roman Catholic, etc.)
- Bridegroom's name; rank and occupation; place of birth (and where and when registered there); age and marital status (whether single or widower); whether it his second or third marriage and whether the former wife is living/deceased; the relationship of parties (if any); usual residence at time of marriage; name and occupation of father and if he was deceased at the time of the marriage; the name and maiden surname of mother and if she was deceased at the time of the marriage
- Same as above for the bride
- Name of officiating minister or priest
- Names (and sometimes addresses) of witnesses

Please remember that civil registration of births, deaths and weddings in Scotland only began in 1855 and that a significant proportion of all hatches, matches and dispatches were never officially recorded. Good luck!
