Expresso™ GROS Birth Certificate

ExpressoScottish Birth Certificates
[For events registered between 1855 and 1907. Actual official certificate - not a transcript.]
Just $55.00 (incl. GST and Australia Post delivery to anywhere in Australia) each.

In the boxes above, enter the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) index reference details for the official pre-1908 Scottish Birth Certificate you require.

[Please note: The document you are about to purchase is a genuine GROS *certificate*, complete with the embossed seal of the Registry Office. If you don't actually require a certified copy of an entry contained in the GROS birth register, perhaps an A4-sized printout of a statutory birth register entry will suffice? Click here for details.]

Due to privacy considerations we are unable to procure certified copies of the birth registration entries for individuals born in 1908 and beyond. For those documents, you will have to apply in person to the GROS.

So what can you expect to see on a birth certificate from 1855 onwards? Well quite a lot really, compared to an equivalent English or Welsh civil registration document. The years 1856 to 1860 aren't much chop, but after then official certificates typically contain these facts:

- Full name of the child and its gender
- Date and time of birth
- Residence at birth
- Name; age; place of birth (and whether the birth was registered there); occupation of father
- Name; age place of birth (and whether the birth was registered there); and maiden surname of mother
- Usual residential address of parents (if this is not the same as the place of the child's birth)
- Date and place of the parents' marriage
- Number and sex of children born prior to the registration of the baby (in 1855); and whether these siblings were still alive or if they had died. The Christian names of the siblings are not indicated
- Name of the informant and the relationship of the informant to the child (if any)

Please remember that civil registration of births in Scotland only began in 1855 (but had been recorded - mostly in relation to baptisms - in the Old Parochial Registers since 1553). That said, a significant proportion of all hatches, matches and dispatches were never officially recorded. Good luck!
