THIS CD provides a database with three indices and some 180,000 entries.

The Queensland Gazetted Licences Index (1860-1901) database was compiled by the Queensland Family History Society Incorporated (QFHS) between 1998 and 2004 as an index to general licence items listed in the Queensland Government Gazette of the period.

Within the database, the Queensland Timber Licences Index (1860-1901) covers about 70,000 entries in the list of applications for several types of timber licences. The Queensland Goldfields Miners' Rights and Business Licences Index (1870-1884) has some 40,000 entries in lists for goldfields miners' rights, miners' licences and business licences. The Queensland Miscellaneous Licences Index (1860-1899) has some 70,000 entries in lists of 33 other types of licences.

The indices are directly searchable on name, year and licence details with QFHSdatasearch. The material on this CD is an excellent resource for accumulating information on family occupations and activities during the period covered by the indices.

Each index gives name, title, location, licence type, and the date and page of the Government Gazette reference, as well as other information specific to the index. The timber licences cover several types of licence relating to cutting and removing timber (including some quarrying licences!). The goldfields miners and business licences include various business types, with many of the licences taken out by women.

The other licences cover numerous activities, from selling postage stamps, to occupations such as auctioneer and surveyor, to dealing in liquor and spirits (apart from publicans and licensed victuallers) and distillers - from sugar, for fortifying wine and even for specific scientific purposes.

QFHSdatasearch is a generic interface designed to search genealogy databases and developed by QFHS. This version features field-orientated and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting, wildcard searches and links between search results and images in PDF files.
