Price: QTY: QLD Post Office Directory, 1874: CD Bailliere's Post Office Directory for Queensland, 1874, on CD-ROM334 pages/searchableJust $40.00 (incl. GST and certified Australia Post postage and handling to anywhere in Australia).THIS CD-ROM's official title page describes it contents and purpose best: The Official Post Office Directory (Professional, Squatting, and Trade) Queensland 1874. Compiled under the Authority of the Postmaster-General by R. P. Whitworth. Arranged Alphabetically with Cross References to Occupations. Published by F. F. Bailliere. In the preface, Bailliere's editor, writes... '...it has long been conceded that Directories are not only convenient works of reference, but absolute necessities; and it would be somewhat hard to comprehend how the commercial, and other, business of the world could be carried on without them. There is no doubt that it would only be with very great difficulty, and at considerable inconvenience and loss. It is, however, needless to point out the advantages accruing to communities from the possession of works of this nature, as those advantages are universally acknowledged and have never been questioned.Up to the present, Queensland has been placed at a disadvantage in not possessing - a general and comprehensive Directory; and it was the knowledge of that fact, and thrbelief that its production would be of public benefit, that induced the Publisher to undertake this work. That it will be found to contain errors, there is no doubt, from the facts of the many difficulties in the way of obtaining correct information from such widely-spread sources, the almost arbitrary method of spelling names, and that there is, so to speak, no basis on which to commence to build. In future editions, however, those errors, which, it is hoped may neither be numerous nor important, will be carefully corrected. The Publisher, in conclusion, beg's to express his acknowledgments to the Hon. Thomas L. Murray-Prior, Postmaster-General, and to John MacDonnell, Esq., Secretary, General Post-office, for the courteous and prompt manner in which they facilitated the collection of the necessary information; and also to the Postmasters throughout the colony, for their valuable aid.N O T I C E.The returns from the following places were received too late for insertion in the Trade and Professional Directory, but will be found in the general Alphabetical Directory, viz:- Bundaberg, Cambooya, Charleville, Gatton, Logan, and Murphy's Creek. The returns from Charters Towers, Cleveland, Gracemere, Kilkivan, Millchester, Oxley, Richmond Downs, Upper Mary, Yandilla, and Yatala came to hand still later, and had to be added as an Appendix, which will be found at the end of the work....'
